Blood transfusion (hemotransfusion) is a therapeutic procedure in which blood is transfused into the circulatory system of a sick animal (recipient) from a healthy one, called a donor.

This is a procedure that is necessary for:

  • Massive blood loss;
  • Shock;
  • Anemia (most often due to parasites);
  • Leukemia;
  • Diseases of the blood-forming organs.

Monitoring, assessment of the quality of the donor’s blood and blood type compatibility are important.

The laboratory results are reviewed and tests are performed for transmissible diseases that could be transmitted to the recipient through the blood.
